The Oilers announced this morning that Kane and undergone knee surgery, which will delay his already lengthy rehab process from multiple abdominal injuries.
However, when Kane met with the media today, he stressed that he was fully intending to return to play this season.
Kane still didn't put an exact timeline on his recovery, but it appears he's referring to a return in the regular season.
At the very least, today's press conference from Kane revealed that it's still unknown if he's referring can return in the regular season or playoffs.
After reports earlier today of Kane's knee surgery, fans and media thought that a return in the regular season was out of the question, and the Oilers could spend his $5.125M in salary at the trade deadline.
However, given how committed Kane appears to be to getting healthy, a return in the regular season may still be possible, and even desirable.
The 33 year old forward will need time to get up to game speed, rather than ramping up in playoffs. Kane scored 24 goals and led the team in hits last year - an impact player they need.
The new timeline from Kane's surgery today puts him fully recovered sometime in February, at which point he will continue his rehab on his abdominal injuries.
He'll have to get healthy before the Oilers play their last game on April 16th, otherwise, the Oilers will have plenty of trade deadline options this season.
More details and analysis to come.
