This has been prominent with the Oilers as rumors continue to swirl with general manager Ken Holland looking across the league to bolster several key areas.
Yesterday, it was reported by Eric Duhatschek of the Athletic That the Oilers may be turning their attention to a Canadian Eastern Conference team for help in acquiring Vladimir Tarasenko of the Ottawa Senators.
The report showed that the Oilers may be willing to dangle forward Raphael Lavoie along with other pieces is to acquire Senko as the Oilers are in a win now mode and could use an upgrade in their top 9 forwards.
This move could make a lot of sense for the Oilers as Senko is exactly what the team needs for their top nine, he still possesses a strong offensive skill along with the ability to put the puck in the net. Acquiring him would also help their five-on-five scoring and their power play.
On the financial front, Senko would be a less expensive option than say Jake Guentzel as Tarasenko holds a cap hit of $5 million for one year. It's quite possible the Senators would be willing to retain up to 50% of that salary to craft the deal which would make it more enticing.
Tarasenko has made it clear he has a desire to go to a contender as the Senators have been nothing short of a train wreck this season and would be willing to waive his no trade.
There's also the Ottawa Edmonton connection through general manager Steve Staios. Staios, worked with the Oilers management team and has a good idea of what prospects and draft picks are available for trade. Both Holland and Staios had a good working relationship which could help craft this deal quicker.
This much is clear, Holland is looking to upgrade his team and Tarasenko could be the solution he's looking for without changing the balance of the dressing room.
