In a statement on social media, the Canadiens announced that Patrik Laine will not require corrective surgery for a knee injury, and will only miss two to three months. He should return sometime before January.
This is incredible news for the Montreal Canadiens and Patrik Laine. In the team's last preseason game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Laine got into an ugly knee on knee collision that knocked him out of the game and has made him need crutches to move around.
Habs fans were stunned when Laine left the ice in incredible pain, thinking their new star player would only play in preseason games this year. Just a knee sprain is relatively a minor injury compared to the concern that he tore his ACL, which would have ended be his whole season.
The Canadiens acquired Laine in trade this offseason after he requested a trade off the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was limited to 18 games last season after spending most of the year in the Player Assistance Pragram for mental health reasons. Laine undoubtedly has raw offensive talent that could make him a prolific goal scorer in the NHL, but he hasn't passed the 30 goals plateau in 6 years now.
Montreal could be the fresh start that Patrik Laine desperately needs. This injury is surely a setback, it's fantastic that he'll be able to play games this season. Hopefully he'll be able to acclimate to the team and his new city while he recovers, and when he hits the ice is ready to be the best version of himself again.
