Mark Madden of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review as revealed that Penguins superstar Evgeni Malkin may be on his final year in the NHL.

During the Madden Monday podcast, there was an open discussion regarding Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and his new contract Which will be signed in the next few days, that Malkin is preparing to leave the NHL after this season.

«I've been told (Malkin) won't be back after this year that he'll go to Russia and forgo the last year of his deal,» Madden said.

He went further to say that Malkin is preparing to forego the final year of his deal so that he can head home to Russia. The 38-year-old centre has had an incredible career with the Penguins as he was drafted in 2004 2nd overall.

Having won three Stanley cups during his tenure won many of the NHL trophies including the Hart. Art Ross, Calder, Conn Smythe and the Ted Lindsay award. He has played 1145 games, scoring 498 goals with 798 assists for 1296 points and is a + 52.

Even on a dismal Pittsburgh Penguins team, he still produced good numbers for his age as he played all 82 games, scoring 27 goals for 67 points and still played 18 minutes and 35 seconds on average for ice time.

If this report is true, this will give the Penguins a $6.1 million cap relief and could help them in their retooling or rebuilding phase. Otherwise, it'll remains to be seen on whether Malkin will follow through with what he's been talking about.
