Desharnais left the Oilers in free agency this offseason to sign a two year contract with the Vancouver Canucks for $4M total. He thanked Oilers fans on social media when his departure was announced, and Desharnais said he's seen nothing but well-wishes from Oilers fans.
Desharnais was a great story for the Edmonton Oilers over the last two seasons. He was drafted by the team in the 7th round of 2016, and against all odds he made his way to the NHL after years of grinding through the minor leagues. Now just cracking the NHL regularly at 28 years old, Desharnais needed to get paid more than the Oilers could afford. Even though he's signing with a rival team, Oilers fans are still hoping the best for him - except when the play Vancouver, obviously.
By all indications, Desharnais will have much bigger expectations in Vancouver, and he may be promoted to the top four. In his time with Edmonton, he mostly succeeded on the third pairing and penalty kill with his physical play. When asked to provide more, Desharnais could get exposed for his mobility and poor passing at times. He's also a great locker room presence, and hopefully will add to the leadership on the Canucks roster.
Regardless, it's great to see Desharnais still feeling the support from Oil Country, and recognizing the fans as a great source of motivation. Even a Canucks player can't deny that Oilers fans are among the best in the NHL!
