Controversial forward Pierre-Luc Dubois shed some light during an interview with Montreal's La Presse about his time spent with the Los Angeles Kings.
Right out of the gate his comments are extremely concerning especially for his new team the Washington Capitals. He claimed that right from the start with the kings, he did not receive clear instructions on what his expectations were.
I get mixed up when there are gray areas. I question myself too much. I've been working on that since I was young. And there, from my first conversations with the team, I didn't really know what was expected of me. I didn't know where I stood. You can't play well when you question yourself too much.
The 26-year-old Dubois was traded from the kings to the Capitals on June 19th in exchange for former starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper. The Kings were highly motivated to rid themselves of the albatross of a contract that was worth $68 million over 8 years.
«Take it as you will, but I've always needed to have clear instructions to do my job 100%.»
Dubois also explained the relationship between himself and his coach Todd McClellan which did not have a good look.
«We didn't talk often. Todd is more of a team tactics coach. Maybe we didn't have that relationship. Maybe I was too demanding, wanting to have the path explained to me. It's obviously my fault that it didn't work. You're not supposed to expect your entourage to help you gain confidence, but it can help. I tried to take on the challenge, but I stayed in a gray area all year. I didn't feel at home. The players helped me, and I wanted it to unblock, but it just wasn't working.»
Now on his fifth NHL organization since 2017, it's safe to say that the relationships between Dubois and the organization he plays for have a fractured relationship. His career now turns to Spencer Carbery who is entering his second year as a head coach with Capitals and has been known as one of the more player-oriented coaches in the NHL and can unlock what he's looking for from the player.
Perhaps Dubois can find his game in Washington.
