Sidney Crosby may pass on Team Canada honour to Connor McDavid
International hockey is finally making a return this season beginning with the Four Nations Faceoff, and there could be a new Captain Canada.
On the latest episode of the Ray and Dregs Podcast, Ferraro and Dreger discussed the possibility of McDavid becoming captain of Team Canada instead of Sidney Crosby.
DREGER: Connor McDavid [will Captain Team Canada] and Sidney Crosby will be okay with that.
FERRARO: I think it's Crosby. I don't know, there's just a respect factor to it.
RISHAUG: If it were not to be Sid, that would be Sid's call would it not?
DREGER: There would be a management conversation with Sid well in advance. McDavid has never played for Team Canada in a best on best tournament since the World Juniors. He's represented Canada as the Captain at the IIHF tournament, but on a roster with Sidney Crosby is entirely different.
Crosby has captained team Canada at the country's last great international tournament when he scored the golden goal. He's the more legacy choice and veteran player than McDavid too, obviously, and Ferraro is right about the respect factor. McDavid will easily defer to the veteran in Crosby if the decision is presented to him, but Crosby may be willing to pass the torch the future of Canadian hockey and the next generational superstar.
The Four Nations Faceoff is set to begin in February of next year, and bring a short break into the NHL season. It'll be a short introduction back to international hockey before the NHL returns to the 2026 Olympics in Milan. Fans are absolutely pumped to see the return of international hockey!
