Woll's contract is expected to be announced on July 1st, when free agency officially opens. Heading into this contract, Woll was still a Restricted Free Agent, with only 39 NHL games played.
With his incredibly limited NHL career, this contract could be a bit of an overpay for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Woll has shown flashes of being an elite goaltender, and has played well in hard playoff situations as well, but awarding a $4M contract to someone with 43 total NHL games is a massive risk.
In his short NHL career, Woll has posted a very good .915 save percentage and 2.65 GAA. However, the reason the 25 year old has only played that many games over 5 seasons is all too frequent injuries. Woll has struggled to stay available for the Leafs in net, even missing Game 7 against Boston this playoffs after making a save in the last second of Game 6.
Woll has the talent to be a great goalie, and perhaps even outperform this contract. To do so he just needs to keep up his play and find a way to stay healthy, but those are two big bets for a player with as little experience as Woll. We'll have to see over the next few years how this contract ages for Toronto.

I'm told the Maple Leafs are closing in on a 3yr contract extension for Joseph Woll
