According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, Trevor Zegras is the seventh biggest name to watch for a trade this offseason. Zegras clearly has an offensive gift with his stick skills, but he has yet to put together a 200-foot game, and the relationship with the Ducks has become slight strained.
Multiple reports suggest that Zegras may actually welcome a trade out of Anaheim, wishing to play in a bigger market. Along with the Calgary Flames, the Canadiens, Flyers, Predators, Blackhawks, Bruins, Sabres, and Rangers are showing interest - which is a good percentage of the league. With this much interest in Zegras and his potential to become a high end top six center, the price to trade for him is reportedly very high.
All hockey fans have seen the incredible skill Zegras has, but now 23 years old and after 4 seasons with the Ducks, he's still not doing anything to help them win - he's got to develop a complete, winning style of hockey too. Last season was marred by injuries, only playing 31 games, but the season prior Zegras scored 23 goals and 65 points in 81 games. For the next two seasons, Zegras is under contract for $5.75M, and then will become an RFA.
If the Calgary Flames are looking to acquire some younger talent who is NHL ready, Trevor Zegras is a perfect candidate. However, whether Zegras can become a Cup-calibre player to beat the Edmonton Oilers in a future playoff series is a whole other story. Regardless, it'll be interesting to watch where Zegras plays his first game next season.
