The Edmonton Oilers are in a tough spot right now, according to NHL Insider Allan Mitchell of The Athletic.

With a regular season record of 5-12-1, Ken Holland and the team find themselves in a precarious position. If the team wants to make the postseason, it will have to do an ugly, ugly thing in the future, a trade in which they overpay for who they need on the roster.

The team could call up Raphael Lavoie or Ben Gleason, but expect them to choose the latter.

If the Oilers were to make a big trade, what would they give up? Philip Broberg, Xavier Bourgault, and anything that cannot be nailed down yet.

They are prepared to overpay for their next move, but they may get what they need in the long run.

Consequently, Ken Holland will have to take another hit from the next trade.

Trades may help, but they may not resolve the team's current issues, which are structural with regards to offensive and defensive performance.

The team will have to figure out a way to break out of their own funk and with the end of Holland's tenure soon, he may try to find a way to jolt the team in any way possible, but even then it may not be enough.
