Now, Oilers insider Bob Stauffer is hinting that Cody Ceci may not be leaving at all, and the Oilers may be leaning toward moving another player instead.
On a new episode of OilersNow, Stauffer said that there is no imminent move coming with Cody Ceci. Some fans are taking this to mean the team will find another way to get under the salary cap. The Oilers were considering trading Evander Kane or placing him on LTIR for a year, but Kane is reportedly using his no-move clause to stay in Edmonton, and will be healthy for next year. That leaves veteran defenceman Brett Kulak, making $2.75M as the most likely trade candidate.
The Oilers are currently $350K over the cap and will need around $2.25M to sign both Broberg and Holloway, so trading Brett Kulak makes the financial work just barely.
On the other hand, it makes the most sense to trade Cody Ceci by far. After signing Troy Stecher and Josh Brown, the Oilers have a surplus of right-shot defenceman capable of playing bottom pair minutes for less money than Ceci.
Now in the heart of the offseason, the Oilers have time to make any of the moves they need to - but not that much. Jeff Jackson needs to hire a GM to negotiate a contract with Leon Draisaitl before training camp begins, as well as getting cap compliant and signing Broberg and Holloway. There's still more than a few offseason business for the Oilers coming soon, and we'll have it all right here.
