Oilersnation Everyday podcaster Tyler Yaremchuk feels that Oilers prospect Matthew Savoie is not the obvious choice to be called up after the NHL department of player safety hands down a suspension to Connor McDavid.
I think when they eventually call up Savoie, it'll be for more than a 2-3 game sample. They'll want to keep him up so no, I don't think they'd bring him up this week. Oilersnation Everyday Tyler Yaremchuk
McDavid along with Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland wrestled in the dying minutes of last night's game between the Oilers and the Canucks in which McDavid cross checked Garland in the side of the head which resulted in an automatic ejection from the game and handed a major penalty.
Yaremchuk thinks Savoie will be looked to later for a longer stretch
Yaremchuk feels that the Oilers would rather give Savoie a two or three-game look to see where he is in his development and if he is ready to play with the Oilers on a steady basis. Likely, McDavid will be receiving a one game suspension for his crosscheck which likely means a small roster move will be needed.
Per AHL transactions the Condors recalled a forward. Which forward got hurt in Bako? Or is someone getting called up?
Many within the organization and the fan base feel that Savoie should be given a chance to play in the NHL as one of their best prospects. The 21-year-old was traded from the buffalo Sabres over the summer when the Oilers sent Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio back to Buffalo.
Matthew Savoie's second assist and third point of the night in another singularly impressive offensive display.
Savoie has had a solid year with the Condors
Eliteprospects.com has pegged Savoie as an offensive center, puck handler and speedster which are all qualities the Oilers could use and through 35 games played with the Bakersfield condors, he has scored ten goals with 17 assists for 27 points and has 16 penalty minutes and is a + 10.
It remains to be seen on who will be called up once the suspension has been handed down for some feel it will be Condors forward Drake Caggiula.
In the meantime, the Oilers will begin there six game homestand where the Washington Capitals will come to town on Tuesday January 21st and game time will be at 9:00 PM eastern.
