According to a new report from Edmonton Journal writer Jim Matheson, Rodrigue is officially joining the Florida Panthers as a member of their goalie coach staff. At the moment, it's unclear if his role will be with the NHL team to their AHL club.
Sylvain Rodrigue has produced some incredible results in developing quality goaltenders out of the minors since joining the Oilers in the 2018-19 season. Under his guidance, Stuart Skinner, Calvin Pickard, and Olivier Rodrigue have all produced promising results and saw noted improvements after their time with him. He's also obviously got a personal connection with the Oilers top goalie prospect Olivier Rodrigue - they're father and son.
Losing Rodrigue may rightfully tick off some Oilers fans who haven't been thrilled with the body of work from current goalie coach Dustin Schwartz. Since he's been with the team in 2014, plenty of goaltenders have come to the Oilers to produce the worst results of their careers. It's been 10 years that he's been with the team now, it seems long past due for a new voice at the position.
Oilers fans will be wishing Sylvain Rodrigue the best in his next opportunity, and may also be hoping for a change in their own department soon.
