Edmonton Oilers Place Defenceman on Waivers After Acquiring His Replacement
The Edmonton Oilers have announced that defenceman Travis Dermott has been placed on waivers, just after they acquired his replacement yesterday.
Alec Regula was claimed by the Oilers yesterday, a 24 year old defenceman who the Oilers see some promise in.
Once the Oilers had the option to acquire Regula, the decision to cut the struggling Travis Dermott became exceedingly clear.
Travis Dermott was healthy scratched for the Oilers last 8 games, and when he was in the lineup, Paul Coffey was benching him. It seems the Oilers have seen enough from Dermott.

The Edmonton Oilers clearly aren't happy with Dermott at the NHL level and wanted to make the upgrade with Regula, but they'll also be hoping that he clears waivers and stays in the organization.
The AHL team only has one left shot defenceman at the moment, and Dermott would be a great piece to fill that gap.
In ten games this season, Dermott scored 0 points and earned a -2 rating, while not bringing much ability to move the puck or being a physical player.
Dermott was signed by the Oilers this fall to a one year, two-way contract for league minimum. If he doesn't pass through waivers, it's possible he's called up later as an injury replacement - but he's now lost his 7th defenceman job to Alec Regula.
Hopefully Dermott is able to strengthen his game again with the Bakersfield Condors and serve as a locker room leader to the organization's prospects. After 339 career NHL games with 4 different teams, it looks like Dermott's time in the big leagues may be over.
