Sportsnet unveiled their newest list of trade bait players this season, and several players may fit the Edmonton Oilers need for a defenceman with term.

Yesterday, Oilers insider Bob Stauffer reported that General Manager Stan Bowman is shopping for a defenceman with term, potentially a player that can play the left side.

On Sportsnet's newest trade bait list, several defenceman with term on their contract appeared on the list, potentially being fits for the Oilers. Four players in particular have at least two years left of control: Cam Fowler, Mario Ferraro, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Alexandre Carrier.

Four Potential Fits for the Edmonton Oilers on Sportsnet's Trade Bait List

Of the defenceman listed above, the Edmonton Oilers have been connected to all of them in the last year.

Cam Fowler of the Anaheim Ducks is perhaps the biggest name on the list, a smooth skating, puck moving defenceman with nearly 1000 career games played. Bob Stauffer has connected Fowler to the Oilers recently, and a move could be made after he played his 1000th game with Anaheim.

Fowler could be one of the most expensive options to acquire for the Oilers, but the most proven player, and the Ducks are willing to facilitate a trade and send him to a contender for the next two seasons.

Still rebuilding, the Ducks are likely to move Fowler now, with Jacob Trouba's leadership coming in, and when Fowler still has another season remaining on his contract, even if it means retaining some of the $6.5 million he'll make against the cap. They have not used any of their three retention slots yet.

Mario Ferraro from the San Jose Sharks is another quality option for the Oilers, under contract for two seasons at a manageable salary of $3.25M.

The 26 year old defender has played 361 career NHL games with the Sharks, scoring 2 goals and 6 points in 31 games this year and playing a stay at home game.

Rasmus Ristolainen with the Philadelphia Flyers is having a resurgent year by scouting reports, but carries a bigger risk at $5.1M for 2 years and doesn't have a long track record of success. In 21 games this year, Ristolainen as 7 points and a -2 rating.

Finally, Alexandre Carrier may be the best fit for the Edmonton Oilers. Carrier was connected to the Oilers in free agency this summer.

The young right shot defender has a history playing with Mattias Ekholm and has posted consistently good results in his 245 NHL games, but is struggling this year on an imploding Predators team.

The Edmonton Oilers are surely acquiring a defenceman this season in trade, that much is known. Who they decide to trade for will be a major turning point for their season, as they have plenty of options, but need to hit a home run to give this Cup-contending roster a final piece to help them out.
