Now, Gibson has been listed on Sportsnet's most recent top trade targets list. Earlier this season the Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Avalanche may have been interested, but now only the Carolina Hurricanes appear to be a suitor for Gibson.
With limited team willing to trade for Gibson and only a few that he's interested in playing for, if Gibson does get traded this season, it will be for very minimal assets.
In addition, any trade for Gibson and his $6.4M contract for the next three seasons would need to include significant salary retention.
Despite the fact Gibson floated to the Oilers he'd be interested in joining them, his salary and shaky play in recent years makes it far too much of a risky move for a contender like Edmonton.
Already tight against the salary cap this year and for years to come, the Oilers have got great value from Stuart Skinner as their primary starting goalie at just $2.6M.
Even though he struggles at times, Skinner finds his way back to being mostly an average goaltender over his career. At $2.6M, that's incredible value for the Oilers, and earlier this year they've said that they'll sink or swim with Stuart Skinner.
This is another insider confirming that the Edmonton Oilers have no interest in adding a goaltender this season.
It could've been valuable to add a cheap tandem goalie, but someone like Gibson was never realistic. Instead, the Oilers will look at adding a defenceman.
