Team Canada and USA opened tonight's long-awaited international best on best game with three surprising fights, but Oilers superstar Connor McDavid was fully supportive of his teammates.

Tonight's game between Canada and the USA had a unique air of rivalry with boos for the national anthem prior to the game. As the game began, players were clearly fired up - including Connor McDavid.

Connor McDavid backs three teammates for fights to begin Team Canada vs USA

Opening the game with three fights in the first 10 seconds was completely unexpected, but in his post game comments, Connor McDavid reiterated how proud he was of his teammates for standing up.
We wanted to get off to a good start, get the fans into it. Pretty proud of all three of those guys to step up and do that.

It was fast, tight checking, competitive, emotional. It had everything you'd want in a hockey game, I thought.

Oddly enough, McDavid's interview aired live on Sportsnet, and was much longer than the 51 second cut that Sportsnet and the Oilers uploaded. Later in the interview, McDavid once again strongly reiterated his support for his teammates sticking up for themselves to begin the game.
While some people thought the anthem booing was disrespectful, and that the Tkachuks turned this game into a sideshow.
On the other hand, all of the players and coaches on both teams commended their teammates for playing with passion and answering the rivalry. The Tkachuks even said they had pre-planned the fireworks to start.
Brandon Hagel explained in an intermission interview that the Tkachuks had been taunting Canada in the pre-game warmups to initiate the fight, and Canada didn't back down.
Despite McDavid scoring an electric opening goal and the fans popping off in the Bell Center, Team Canada fell to the USA 3-1.
Canada now has to beat Finland for an opportunity for a rematch in the finals against the USA.
