According to reports from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Calgary Flames are planning to place former Oilers defenceman Tyson Barrie on waivers today.

Barrie joined the Calgary Flames on a tryout contract at training camp and was able to turn it into a one year contract for $1.25M, but things went south quickly.

Tyson Barrie being placed on waivers by Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames played Barrie for a few games at the beginning of the season, and then he became a scratch for much of the year. Barrie has only played 13 games with the Flames this season, in which he has 3 points and a -7 on ice rating.
According to Flames reporters, Barrie has been absent from multiple practices now this week which caused speculation a move is coming.
For the 33 year old Barrie, this could be the end of the line for his NHL career. His last season with the Nashville Predators also went very poorly with multiple healthy scratches and a trade request, but there were no takers. Signing a tryout contract is an indication too NHL managers aren't high on him.
Barrie played three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers between 2020-2023, and may have given the last good years of his career in that time. With the Oilers Barrie was never a strong defensive player, but was an asset with his passing from the back end and on the powerplay - leading to three straight seasons with more than 40 points.
Now being placed on waivers only 13 games after a tryout contract, it's hard to imagine Barrie carving out a role for himself in the NHL next year. It seems very unlikely he'd be claimed on waivers.
Hopefully Barrie lands on his feet in his next opportunity, whether it's in the NHL, AHL, or elsewhere.
