Regula is a 24 year old right shot defender who was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round of the 2018 Draft.
The Edmonton Oilers have been in the market for acquiring a defenceman via trade, but it seems they may try a low-cost solution first in an under the radar player like Regula.
Described as a playmaking blueliner Regula has bounced between the NHL and AHL frequently since the 2020-21 season. He's only played 22 career NHL games, and has yet to play in the NHL this season.
Regula spent the entire 2023-24 season with the Bruins AHL team, recording an impressive total of 26 points in 55 games, along with an incredible +36 on ice rating. He's also 6'4 and 210 pounds, a size that's an inherent asset in hockey.
Because the Oilers claimed Regula on waivers, he has to stay on the NHL roster for now. A corresponding move can happen tomorrow, which could be trying to sneak Regula to the Bakersfield Condors, but it's more likely another player will depart.
The primary candidate seems to be depth Oilers defenceman Travis Dermott, who hasn't appeared in the last 8 games.
Defence coach Paul Coffey was benching Dermott when he was in the lineup, so it's possible another roster move follows this waivers claim.
We'll see if Regula joins the Oilers for their game tomorrow night against the Minnesota Wild. For now, it seems like he's absolutely worth a shot on the NHL roster for at least a trial run.
