Moments ago, the Edmonton Oilers announced that the team has finally recalled defenceman Philip Broberg.

As several insiders have reported in previous days, Broberg will come up to join the team to play the final two games in the NHL, and give Knoblauch the opportunity to rest some other defenceman. With Broberg in the lineup for the next two games, it's likely that Mattias Ekholm, Darnell Nurse, and Brett Kulak will see some rest, and Troy Stecher will also get some more ice time.

Since requesting a trade earlier this season due to lack of ice time, Broberg and the Oilers have mended the relationship and Broberg has taken another step in his development. He's been a force in the AHL playing top minutes this season, recording 5 goals and 35 points in 48 games. Just earlier this week, Broberg capped off his impressive campaign with an awesome end-to-end game winning goal.

Drafted in the first round in just 2019, the Oilers still have high hopes that Broberg can develop into being a fixture on the Oilers blueline in the future. As an RFA under team control, Broberg could become a very important piece organizationally by being a quality defender on a cheaper contract. Some fans are really high on Broberg, even thinking at one point that he could have the ceiling of Victor Hedman.

Calling Broberg up now serves the purpose of resting some veteran defenceman, but also gives Broberg another look in the NHL - an opportunity for him to grow and the Oilers to analyze him. Hopefully Broberg can have a good showing in these two games, and potentially gain some momentum towards making the team out of training camp next year.
