The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Ryan Fanti as an emergency goalie, and he is expected to join the team right away.
There's nothing to be concerned about here, both Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard are still healthy, but the team is just looking to carry an extra goalie with the expanded rosters. As the Oilers themselves explained, it's simply an emergency recall - and likely will just take on some extra work during morning skates and practices. Fanti has played the last two seasons with in the ECHL, frankly with little success.
It's curious to see that the Oilers did choose to recall Fanti, a 24 year old goalie from the ECHL. With the AHL Bakersfield Condors playoffs beginning as well, it seems the Oilers organization would like both Jack Campbell and Olivier Rodrigue to remain in place, and hopefully take the Condors deep in the Calder Cup playoffs. They've both been instrumental to the team's success this year, so it makes sense to allow them to see it through by staying with the team through the AHL playoffs.
With this roster move, the Oilers are officially set for the entire playoffs. All that's left is to play the games, stay healthy, and hope that this team can finally deliver on the promise of a Stanley Cup during McDavid's prime.
