It appears that the Edmonton Oilers are preparing to make another major roster decision after they have recalled rookie center Noah Philp from the Bakersfield Condors.
I talked this week about why a Philp recall made sense. Needs some run now. He will not hurt this team at all. I think he's actually a part of the long term solution.
With Philp now on the roster, Head Coach Kris Knoblauch will need to make the call on whether veteran forward
Derek Ryan or
Josh Brown will be needed to be send down to the condors to make room for Philp.
Oilers willing to give Philp a long look in second half of season
Philp was the last player during training camp who remained with the team prior to being sent down to the American Hockey League.
Many pundits across the Oilers felt that he would stay with the team for the entire year as he showed tremendous promise in his game after being away for over a year on leave.
Now, Oilers insider Jim Matheson is confirming another roster move will come imminently.
The 26-year-old center who stands at six foot 3 and 201 pounds currently holds a contract of one year worth $775,000.
Over the past 28 games with Bakersfield, he has scored 9 goals with 8 assists for 17 points and has 19 penalty minutes and as a +2.
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman is trying to evaluate his talent and attempt to correct his issues on two fronts, looking at his depth chart with the condors and shopping on the market as the NHL trade deadline approaches and teams will begin to make players available as their playoff hopes fade.
Oilers have several needs to fulfill this trade deadline
Secondary scoring and bottom six help are definitely a priority for the Oilers this trade deadline. If Philp can resolve this issue, it will go a long way in terms of attempting to trade while losing draft capital and potential prospects.
The Oilers will also be shopping for defenseman as they are seeking an upgrade within their blueline.
It remains to be seen on how well Philp will respond, but it's safe to say he will do his best to try to make an impression again and stay with the team for the long haul and potentially be on the roster for the playoffs.
