According to a new update from Mark Spector, Kane's surgery to correct his sports hernia is scheduled for 10 days from now. His recovery timeline will be assessed after the surgery.
Kane revealed to the media before last playoffs began that he was dealing with a sports hernia through the majority of last season. Although he still had a good season by scoring 24 goals in 77 games, Kane's play clearly suffered through the year due to the injury, and the problems only got worse in the playoffs. In the Cup Final, Kane was scratched for the final few games because the injury was affecting his play so much.
As Spector noted, how long Kane will be out will greatly affect the Oilers approach to the salary cap this season. If Kane is unable to return until the playoffs, the Oilers could broke a strategy from the Vegas Golden Knights, and ice a playoff roster well above the salary cap. If Kane will return mid-season, he may not even be placed on LTIR, and the Oilers will accrue cap space throughout the year. That way, they'll still have more cap space for a trade at the deadline.
The Edmonton Oilers are a worse team without Evander Kane, and everyone will be hoping for his return to the roster as soon as possible. Hopefully when he returns, he's in better shape than we saw him last - and he can get back to being that explosive power forward that he's known to be.
