In Kostin's time on the Oilers, he was able to fulfill a much needed role of a bottom six power forward with some scoring ability. In the playoffs, his game translated incredibly well, and he was able to come through in some clutch moments, including a game winning goal against the LA Kings. Kostin was a great fit on the ice and had great success here, but he was also beloved by his teammates and even the media. Kostin was able to meet up with some friends in Vincent Desharnais, and Oilers reporter Tony Brar.
Unfortunately, the Oilers had to trade Kostin to the Detroit Red Wings last offseason for salary cap purposes - even though Kostin's owed a very reasonable $2M. His career took a significant downturn in Detroit, but he's once again found success and plenty of ice time in 17 games with San Jose this year.
Kostin's under contract until the end of the 2024-25 season, but judging by his on-ice and off-ice fit in Edmonton, it wouldn't be surprising at all to see the Oilers circle back to him in free agency. Other than tonight, Oilers fans are certainly cheering for Kostin to have success wherever he goes in his career. Hopefully a reunion will be possible in the future - Kostin is already calling Edmonton home, so it shouldn't be too hard.
