Full contract breakdown and clauses included in Leon Draisaitl extension

This morning was a fantastic day for Oilers franchise history. Leon Draisaitl has signed an eight year contract extension with an annual value of $14M, making him an Oiler for life.

There was a great amount of speculation around the terms of the deal, as there would be with any superstar extension, but Draisaitl's specifically given the sheer size of the deal and what it means for the future of the team. Insiders speculated about deferred money, taking a discount to be competitive, and many other cap moves - and now we have the full details.

According to PuckPedia, Draisaitl's extension is heavily frontloaded and paid out in hefty bonus payments. Draisaitl will collect $13M annually on July 1st, with his salary only being $1M throughout the season.

In addition, Draisaitl will have a full no-movement clause for the entire eight years of the deal. According to a report from Pierre LeBrun, Draisaitl and the Oilers talked extensively in the last few weeks about the future of the team before the contract was finalized.

When Draisaitl's contract expires, he'll be nearly 38 years old and will have been an Edmonton Oiler for his entire career - a dream come true for fans of the team. When speaking to the media, Leon expressed pure love for the city and the team he's become a man in, and wants to win the Stanley Cup with the team that drafted him. Not only that, but he hinted that Connor McDavid won't be far behind him in signing a long term extension.
