Only 15 seconds into overtime, Connor McDavid zipped a great pass to Mattias Ekholm, who then fished a perfect pass to Leon Draisaitl for a tap-in winner. It was Leon's second goal of the night, and he was obviously amped to get the winning goal, maybe especially on his birthday.
After the game, Draisaitl was the first to be interviewed by Gene Principe. Draisaitl gave a candid account that the Oilers weren't great in the first half of the game, but found their legs as it went on and battled back for the win. On the winning goal, he credits Ekholm's perfect pass as the sole reason.
When asked about his feelings and potential plans for his birthday, Draisaitl had a sly smile and said that there won't be any celebrations because of their back-to-back game tomorrow. Although Leon didn't have any plans, Principe surprised Draisaitl with three cupcakes. Principe wishing Draisaitl a happy birthday in German as well, to which Leon just laughed and said thanks.
Before the game, Gene Principe even did a full German rendition of Happy Birthday for Leon Draisaitl.
Through the Oilers slow start as a team, Leon Draisaitl has still been finding ways to produce - even after he was benched at times. Draisaitl's three point night with two goals now gives him the team lead of 6 goals in 9 games. Draisaitl's a generational player, and he's starting to get back to his best version of himself this year.
Now with two great wins in a row with a dominant game against the Penguins and the comeback against Detroit, the Oilers are back to the threshold of .500 and can start building back their record to their ceiling of a President's Trophy contender.
