Leon Draisaitl speaks on his plans for pending free agency
The Edmonton Oilers began their media day today after losing in the Stanley Cup Final, and Leon Draisaitl was asked about the elephant in the room - his pending free agency.
Draisaitl is entering the final year of his contract with the Oilers, and is eligible to sign an extension as of July 1st. He was asked about his intentions on signing with the team, and gave a business answer.
«I will give you the most boring answer. I will sit down and talk to my agent, talk to the Oilers and find out what they want. I love playing in Edmonton. I am well aware of what is going on, but I haven't spent much time thinking about what I want to do»
Draisaitl continued to add that he loves being an Oiler more than anything, and at this belief is at an all time high that the Oilers can win the Stanley Cup. Draisaitl didn't commit to re-signing in Edmonton, but that would hurt his bargaining position
Yesterday, Chris Johnston of the Athletic reported that the Oilers are making it an absolute priority to re-sign Draisaitl this offseason, but if he hesitates and draws out the process, the team will be prepared to move him. It'd be a tough reality and worst case scenario, but the Oilers can't lose Draisaitl for nothing in free agency.
Edmonton is not inclined to let [Draisaitl] simply play out the final year of his contract . . . Trying to get him extended is considered a «massive priority» for the Oilers at the outset of this offseason, but they'll pivot if he shows any reluctance to commit. They've got some wiggle room to trade Draisaitl, if it comes to that, since his contract includes a 10-team trade list alongside a no-movement clause.
- Chris Johnston
Hopefully for the Oilers and their fans, Draisaitl has made a connection to Edmonton and the Oilers as his home, and decides to re-sign and finish the job of winning here. If he loves being an Oiler more than anything, Draisaitl won't be going anywhere.
