According to Oilers reporter Tony Brar at practice, Connor McDavid was a full participant in today's practice and will likely return to the lineup tonight on a new look first line. Jeff Skinner will be promoted to the first line, with Zach Hyman still on right wing. Moving Skinner to the top line is a welcome change that the offensive player has earned.
It's absolutely incredible that McDavid will be returning to the lineup much early than the projected 2-3 weeks he was supposed to miss. Even if he doesn't play tonight, it's very likely now that he does in the next game against the Vancouver Canucks. Hopefully he isn't rushing back, but McDavid has the best possible medical team working on his recovery. It's great they're able to get him back on the ice so quick.
McDavid was supposed to miss between 6-11 games, but if he's able to return tonight, he'll have missed only four - including the game he got hurt. It's a sure sign of his pure competitiveness and drive to get back in the ice. After seeing video of his ankle going directly into the boards, fans were worried McDavid could be out long term with a high grade ankle sprain.
Hopefully in the few games without McDavid in the lineup, the Oilers were able to learn some lessons about elevating their team game. If they can, they'll be able to take off from this point in the season.
After practice the Oilers will likely give their confirmation of McDavid's status heading into tonight. It's the best kind of news for Oilers fans.
