It was a great evening for Oilers defenseman Brett kulak as his team defeated the New York Rangers 6-2 and making his announcement that his wife and himself are expecting their second child.

He broke the news as he was a guest on Hockey Night In Canada's After Hours segment on Saturday night where he told the panel that his family was expecting their new family member later this year.

«Due date is the end of April and we play our last game I think on April 16,» Kulak said. «Hopefully the baby comes on the 17th and then get a couple days before our first-round matchup.»

Aside being a special announcement for their family, he also mentioned that the due date will be in April which would coincide with the beginning of the playoffs which he hopes his Oilers will be part of.

He recounted when his first child was born back in 2022 when the Oilers were playing the LA Kings in their round.

«I get the call in the middle of the night and then I'm up and caught the earliest flight I could,» Kulak said. «I flew into Calgary and my mom drove down from Stony [Plain] and picked me up and drove me out to Canmore and I was able to be there for the birth.»

Kulak is in his fourth season with the Oilers as he came over to the team in a trade from the Montreal Canadiens.

He has been an active point getter over the yearsand has been a stable defenseman as head coach Kris Knoblauch has given him on average 19 minutes and 14 seconds of ice time this year.

The Oilers are currently working on finding the defence pairings that would work best as the team had reconfigured their defence score significantly this past summer.

It's likely players like Kulak will be demanded to play more minutes and play a bigger role with the team as it approaches the March trade deadline.

It's expected the Oilers to be active in the trade market and will seek defensive help as it looks for consistency.
