Kevin Woodley of In Puck Magazine Revealed earlier today that Oilers goaltender prospect Eemil Vinni had back surgery prior to the 2024 entry draft.

Interim general manager Jeff Jackson along with his drafting team felt that it was worth the risk drafting the young goaltender even with the surgery as the team continues to shore up it's goaltending prospects. Vinni Was drafted in the second round, 64th overall and stands at six foot three 185 lbs.

According to many pundits he has an aggressive style of play with a great hockey IQ and hand eye coordination.
Steven Ellis of the dailyfaceoff.com gave a modest review on the young Finn.

«Vinni's stats might not be special, but it's difficult being a starter in a pro league at 18. Vinni didn't get a start at the World Juniors, but he's arguably been Finland's best goaltender in the U-20 national team competition this year. At 6-foot-2, he has decent size and, fortunately, he isn't overcommitting on shots as much as he was a year ago. Vinni will need a lot of seasoning before becoming an NHLer, but I see potential there in how he commands himself in the crease. I think he's one of those guys we're going to see have a breakout season in Liiga before heading to the AHL and becoming an NHL backup.»

It's important to note that the Oilers are recognizing their goaltending needs to be improved and bring in a goaltender like Vinni will help strengthen their depth and likely see him play in Bakersfield within the next year or two.
