According to a recent report from Aaron Portzline of the Athletic, the Blue Jackets may have reduced their asking price for Jiricek to a first round draft pick.
Previously, it was reported that the Blue Jackets were seeking a blue chip prospect in a one-for-one deal for Jiricek.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers may be ruled out of Jiricek trade talks because they don't have a prospect like that to trade. If the asking price is reduced to much less, that would greatly help the Oilers meet that price.
The Oilers don't have their first round draft pick this season, but they do have theirs to deal in the next two seasons - Edmonton also has a glutton of depth defenceman. They can surely meet the asking price for Jiricek now.
David Jiricek was previously named a top three trade target for the Oilers this season, along with Ivan Provorov and Marcus Pettersson.
Jiricek is an interesting case because his game hasn't fully translated to the NHL level yet. He's shown promise to be an elite two-way defender, but for now foot speed and defensive play have been a concern in Columbus.
Jiricek also comes on an entry level contract, which would be a major benefit for Edmonton if he becomes an impact player.
The Columbus Blue Jackets may come to seriously regret trading a 20 year old prospect after only 53 NHL games, especially after drafting him 6th overall two years ago. The Oilers could be the beneficiaries of the Blue Jackets mistake.
Edmonton has still been ruled out of trade talks for now, and multiple insiders aren't naming them as a team to watch for Jiricek anymore. Hopefully, this change in trade price changes things.
It seems that a move for David Jiricek could be relatively imminent, so if the Oilers do decide to make a move for the Columbus defenceman, it could come very soon.
