Joey Moss was a huge Oilers fan with Down Syndrome, who became a locker room attendant with the team after striking up a friendship with Wayne Gretzky. Moss worked for the Oilers for over 30 years until his death in 2020. Today, the Oilers play La Bamba as their victory song in his memory.
In his time with the Oilers, Moss struck up many friendships with longtime players, like Sam Gagner. On the verge of the Stanley Cup Final, Gagner was remembering his friend Joey Moss, and went to visit his house before leaving for Florida.
It's incredible to see Gagner keep Joey in his memory on the biggest stage of his career with the Oilers. Drafted in the first round by the team back in 2007 and journeying across the NHL and back to Edmonton, Gagner has a unique perspective on how special Oilers hockey is. To hear him reflecting upon Joey Moss before the Cup Final is one of the most heartwarming things in hockey.
Unfortunately, Gagner is also caught in a conundrum for the Cup Final this year. Gagner currently doesn't meet the eligibility to have his name engraved on the Cup, because he hasn't played enough games this season. To get his name engraved on the Cup if they win, the Oilers will have to play him for one game in the Final despite not playing all playoffs. Being one of the biggest fan favourites and a veteran who truly deserves it, hopefully Gagner gets in for one game.
