The Washington Capitals may have set the bar for the future contract of Oilers starting goaltender Stuart Skinner as they had signed Logan Thompson to a six year contract extension that's worth $35.1 million.
Oilersnation Everyday podcast host Liam Horrobin linked Thompson'ss new deal to the potential new deal for Skinner as his three-year deal has one year left and the Oilers will have a chance to sign him long term in the summer.
Skinner's numbers should produce a good contract for himself
After the departure of Jack Campbell, Skinner was anointed the starting goalie job him had performed admirably at times for the Oilers. He has had a strong workload and decent numbers when it comes to save percentage versus league wide average and goals against.
"Super happy with how our team responded." Stuart Skinner catches up with @GenePrincipe after his 39-save performance that helped the Oilers move into first place in the Pacific Division.
Since his contract officially began at the start of the 2023-24 season, Skinner
is 34th in save percentage at .904, which is slightly above the league average of 0.902. He's 16th in goals against average at 2.65 and his 55 wins for the fourth most during that period. He's also started in 90 games (sixth most) and appeared in 92. Of the other goaltenders that have played more than 92 games over the past season and a half, only Connor Hellebuyck has a better save percentage and goals-against average than Skinner does. - Liam Horrobin Oilersnation Everyday Skinner was key to the Oilers turnaround this season
This season, he has played 33 games and holds a record of 19-11-3 with a goal against of 2.69 in the save percentage of .902 with two shutouts.
He had signed a three-year deal Back in December of 2022 where it held a cap hit of $2.6 million per season. It's safe to say that his next contract with the Oilers or another team will be well north of that number.
Horrobin feels that Skinner will likely have a contract that will be between Nashville Predators starter Juuse Saros and Thompson. Overall, he has been a workhorse for the Oilers and has helped the team play in the Stanley Cup finals last year.
"Everyone's doing well, everyone's healthy... Another moment that's just one of the best days ever." Stuart Skinner on the birth of his second son, Darcy, yesterday.
Skinner's next deal is likely going to fall between Juuse Saros and Logan Thompson's deal. It shouldn't get as high as Saros but deserves to be more than Thompson, who has only played 130 NHL games and only four times in the postseason. Skinner has the advantage of playing in meaningful playoff games and performing. - Liam Horrobin OilersNation Every day
Aside the surge in the standings which has put the Oilers in first place in the Pacific division, Skinner and his family are celebrating the birth of his second son Darcy which will likely give him another boost in his confidence and his game.
