The Oilers have been previously ranked as the top team in the NHL by power rankings and with Stanley Cup Odds of 12% by MoneyPuck.
However, Luszczyszyn's new odds released by the Athletic favour the Edmonton Oilers significantly more, giving them shockingly good odds of 18%.
When it comes to the final result of the Stanley Cup, a difference of 6% odds is a meaningful increase. What's more is that Luszczyszyn's model performs as the best analytical model in hockey.
Luszczyszyn's projection also has the Oilers finishing with 108 points, which would have them first in their division and second in the NHL.
That would give Edmonton home ice advantage in every playoff round except facing the Jets, and with the Oilers dominance at home, that's a significant advantage.
The Oilers are currently at a total of 47 points through 37 games, so Luszczyszyn's model would have Edmonton going on a major winning streak in the second half of the year.
They're currently 6 points back of Vegas for the division lead, so it'd be a massive comeback in the standings. There was a 16 game winning streak last year, so it's entirely possible.
Hopefully these projections come true, because they'd be fantastic news for Oilers fans. After making it to Game 7 of the Cup Final last year, the Oilers can practically taste the first win in the McDavid era.
