Instead, today Ryan's wife confirmed on Instragram that he will be back for the next season.
Derek Ryan may have one of the most interesting breakthrough stories to get into the NHL in recent league history. After being undrafted and playing college hockey,
the Wisconsin native played overseas for several years before earning an AHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. Ryan was called up to make his NHL debut at 30 years old, and has since stuck in the league for 570 games. He was still a serviceable depth center last season, but it's unquestionable that he's begun to slow down.
Additionally, veteran Oilers legend Sam Gagner was spotted skating earlier today. Gagner is currently without a contract, but has stated that he has no intention of retiring this offseason, and is still hoping to get an NHL deal. Last season he joined the Oilers on a Tryout Offer, and it's very possible that's how he gets onto a new team this year - if he gets a contract at all. The Oilers simply don't have any more room for Gagner who only played 28 games for the team last year. Still, at 34 years old, Gagner's got more good hockey left in him. He's currently skating in Ontario, and his hometown Leafs could have a fit for him.
Sam Gagner has had a true journeyman's career through the NHL since being drafted in the first round by the Oilers in 2007, and it would've been incredible to see him retire with the team - having a full circle moment. It could still be in the cards, but right now it looks like Gagner will have to fight to earn himself another shot in the show this year.
