Moments ago on today's episode of the Kyper and Bourne on Sportsnet, Leafs insider Nick Kypreos revealed that the team is closing in on extending their superstar forward William Nylander. According to Kypreos, the deal could come as soon as the All-Star Break on February 3rd, and his contract will carry a cap hit of over $11M each season for eight years.

It's trending closer to the Leafs and Willy getting a deal done, is what I hear. The general feeling, amongst I think both sides is they'd like to get it done before the NHL Allstar Weekend. The other belief is that it will be a number that is over 11.

It's a massive development for the contract talks between Nylander and the Leafs, after it seemed like the two parties may be unable to get a deal done. After a strong start to this year from Nylander raised his contract demands, it was unclear whether the Leafs could commit to an even higher raise than expected. Now, it seems like GM Brad Treliving sees just how important Nylander is to the team.

This season, Nylander has scored 17 goals and 48 points in 34 games, coming off an incredible season last year as well wherein he scored 40 goals for the first time. Drafted by the Leafs 8th overall back in 2014, Nylander has become a home grown bona-fide star for the team.
