With the $42 million Lucic contract, he was capable of worse and acted it on constantly.
While Connor McDavid was in his early years with the team, Chiarelli had the bright idea of trading Jason Garrison and Drake Caggiula for Brand Manning and Robin Norrell. Trading for the guy who injured your star player is brilliant.
He would also move on from Ryan Strome, who was severely underappreciated in Edmonton, where he was traded for Ryan Spooner. Strome would go on to be a big part of the New York Rangers core until he was recently moved to Anaheim. Spooner isn't even in the NHL anymore. Also, another big-brained move from Chiarelli was moving an asset like a Conditional 2018 4th Round Pick for Al Montoya, who was on his way out of his league, not by choice; he would end up playing 9 games with the Oilers and 11 in Bakersfield with a .879 SV%, yikes!
In other bad moves, moving a mentor for a depth asset isn't always the choice to make, as assets can be eventual NHLers, when he traded Mark Letestu for Pontus Aberg, they lost this one, 16 games played with 8 points total isn't terrible, but was it necessary?
In terms of not-so-terrible trades, but not the proper return was sending Taylor Hall to New Jersey for Adam Larsson, Larsson wasn't terrible by any means, but if it was prime Hall, it would've been worse.
A huge part of the offensive decline was the choice to move Jordan Eberle, who was a top-six staple for Ryan Strome, and not knocking Strome, but they wouldn't even put Strome on McDavid's wing.
Last but not least, a 1st and 2nd round pick for Griffin Reinhart, whose stay in the NHL would be short, especially in Edmonton. Matthew Barzal would end up being the 1st round pick for the New York Islanders, which Chiarelli sent the picks.
