BREAKING - Edmonton Oilers Prospect Suspended Indefinitely Following Police Investigation
The WHL is a league for developing future NHL players and the Edmonton Oilers have a prospect currently playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Developmental leagues are there to teach players new skills, learn teamwork and play at a higher level and one Edmonton Oilers prospect is causing a stir in the WHL.
breaking: the whl has announced sanctions against the moose jaw warriors after four players including edmonton oilers prospect max wanner, were suspended indefinitely by the league on feb. 13 in relation to an off-ice incident. the whl says connor ungar, lynden lakovic, marek howell and wanner have been suspended the remainder of the whl regular season.
warriors gm jason ripplinger and head coach mark o'leary have been suspended five regular season games and the team has been fined $25,000.
in a statement, the whl says the off-ice incident took place in edmonton in february and while edmonton police deemed it «not criminal in nature,» the incident «was determined to be a violation of team and league rules, the league said.
the four players will be required to conduct «personal conduct and respect training» before being reinstated by the league, while ripplinger and o'leary are subject to discipline «on the basis of failing to provide the proper oversight and supervision required to ensure a safe and positive environment for players, in particular, while travelling.»
here's the who's statement in full:
This is troubling news for the Edmonton Oilers and Max Wanner, as he was considered a "project defender" as he had limited offensive capabilities and he needs the ice time to continue to build his game. Now as a result of his actions, he will be disciplined as he violated league rules, along with 3 other Moose Jaw players.
While it is great that the WHL is swift to hand-out discipline for the wrongdoing which occurred, the lack of oversight and discipline by Wanner will set himself back in the eyes of the team who drafted him and will stunt his continued progression of becoming a two-way defender.
