Tomas Plekanec, a veteran in professional hockey since 2003, has officially retired. Plekanec played 1001 games in the NHL, primarily with the Montreal Canadiens, and 17 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He announced his retirement due to health reasons while serving as the captain for Klado, a team owned by Jaromir Jagr. Kladno has named Radek Smoleňák as the new captain and plans to explore the free-agent market for roster additions.

"I have to stop due to health reasons. I was hoping that a few weeks' rest would have been enough, but that's not the case. I am terribly sorry. I would have liked to help my team, but it would be a huge risk for me."

Jagr expressed gratitude for Plekanec's contributions and wished him health and happiness. Plekanec's NHL career comes to a close after a storied journey.

"Pleky, thank you for helping us when we needed it most. You sacrificed yourself for Kladno."

"You were a huge role model for the team and I could always count on you."

"And when I came back to the game, you always made it easy for me, because you understand me and get along with me on the ice. A long time ago you could have devoted yourself to your family and stopped playing hockey, but you helped us as long as your health allowed. Above all, I wish you health and happiness."
