Eastern conference team beginning process of relocation
According to a new report from Scott Abraham of 7News DC, the Washington Capitals will begin the relocation process tomorrow.
This shocking report details the plans of Ted Leonsis, owner of both the Washington Capitals and the Washington Wizards NBA team. Tomorrow morning, Leonsis is meeting with the Governor of Virginia with a proposal to move both franchises to the northern part of the state.
It may not be a significant move in geography, but it will be a significant move for the teams. Both rely heavily on branding from the country's capital, and moving outside to Virgina might necessitate a new team name for the Capitals.
Unfortunately, attendance has been decreasing across all sports in Washington for some time. This may be the end result - the owner picking up the team and moving to secure more money from a larger audience elsewhere.
