The 25 year old Swedish star is in the final year of his contract that pays him $7.35M annually, and when his contract expires, he'll still be a restricted free agent. However, with the success he's had this season driving up his contract demands, rumours have been circulating that the team and Pettersson may part ways.
Recently, Pettersson was said to have interest in joining the Chicago Blackhawks on the Spittin' Chiclets Podcast, and even that he'd recruit William Nylander as well for a super team in Chicago.
Now, Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that there is some validity to that thought, although it is still early.
Friedman went on to say that the Canucks are willing to make a massive offer to keep Pettersson with the team. Additionally, Friedman said that Pettersson doesn't like that these rumours are out there and he'd like to keep the negotiations more private.
Whether Pettersson stays in Vancouver, is traded, or walks to free agency, he will command a massive salary. Still just 25 years old and playing a primary position at center, Pettersson is having another incredible season this year posting 13 goals and 43 points in 36 games. It's a strong start to the year, and backs up his breakout season last year where he scored 39 goals and 102 points. For now, Canucks fans have to appreciate the talent they have, and hope they can keep him in Vancouver.
