The NHL is making it known that they do take player safety seriously and will hand out fines to anyone who breaks the code of player conduct.
Lightning forward Austin Watson learned that the hard way after receiving the maximum fine for unsportsmanlike conduct during the Lightning's loss to the Nashville Predators.
As the final seconds ticked down in the game, Watson launched a slap shot directly towards Jeremy Lauzon who took the brunt of it. Reeling in pain, several players from the Predators went straight to Watson and mauled him quickly.
Lauzon, deeply angered by this move smashed his stick on the ice as he left limping down the corridor to the dressing room.
Whether this was an accident or intentional, the NHL will no longer tolerate these kinds of acts. All finds to NHL players go to the NHL Players Assistance Program.
