Last season, the NHL left their existing merchandise deal with Adidas in favour of Fanatics. Many fans across the league were upset with the move, as Fanatics is known to have obvious quality issues compared to Adidas. Now, fans have seen a leak of the new Tampa Bay Lightning jerseys, and the reviews are definitely mixed.

The jersey features an entirely black base with a new circular logo. Other than that, the jersey looks very simple, with basic arm piping and a solid stripe near the bottom.

Early on, most fans seem critical of the design and the colour choices, and the move towards almost an even simpler jersey. It seems like in recent years, aside from specialty jerseys, most team's uniforms have trended in a more dull simplistic design like these new Lightning jerseys.

This questionable jersey is another step in a concerning downward trend for NHL jerseys. They're trending in a simpler more boring direction, being contracted to subpar manufacturers, and beginning to include ads as well. Hopefully the NHL will see this trend, especially if sales are affected, and take a better direction than Fanatics with their next jersey manufacturing deal.
