Oilers' Video Coach Breaks Silence on Departure
It's not too often in an NHL organization that the video coach becomes an integral part of the fan base. These individuals who work behind the scenes, supporting the head coach and assisting on the bench whenever officials make mistakes, necessitating a challenge to reverse a call.
Jeremy Coupal, who has been with the Oilers organization for the last seven seasons, announced yesterday that he will leave the team. This decision sent shockwaves through Twitter and other online platforms as the fanbase learned of this development.
He has been instrumental with the Oilers in his now famous challenge calls and has an impressive record of being right.
Today, Ryan Rishaug of TSN sheds light on the reasons behind Coupal's departure.
It remains to be seen whether these personal reasons are permanent, resulting in his departure from the NHL entirely, or if he will surface elsewhere with another team, as many organizations will undoubtedly be interested in acquiring his services.
Given the power of technology and the importance of having an extra set of eyes to identify mistakes like referees do, a skilled professional like Coupal would be a vital component of any coaching staff.
