This morning, the NHL Department of Player Safety showed the first sign of dishing out a lengthy suspension, by offering Red Wings' forward David Perron an in-person suspension.
Last night, Wings' captain Dylan Larkin suffered a scary injury that left him motionless on the ice. In response, Perron attacked Senators' defenceman Artem Zub with a leaping cross-check to the face.
It was a truly shocking and aggressive enactment of revenge, and Perron was rightfully assessed a five minute major for intent to injure. Now being offered an in-person hearing from Player Safety, it's likely that Perron will see a long suspension, potentially more than 5 games.
Although Perron doesn't have a reputation for this kind of violent play, his suspension should still be enough to dissuade this kind of aggression again.
