Moments ago, the St. Louis Blues announced that they have fired head coach Craig Berube. This comes just after they blew a one goal lead in the third period, and lost to the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 6-4. This loss drops their record to 13-14-1 this season.

Replacing Berube will be an interim head coach, Drew Bannister, who had previously been with the Blues' AHL affiliate.

For a roster that shouldn't have commanded high expectations this year, it's surprising that the Blues felt the need to shake up their locker room with this coaching change. In the last two years, the team has clearly been re-tooling and trying to introduce younger players while trading veterans. Firing Berube may indicate that the Blues feel they should be further along in their rebuild than they currently are.

Today marks the end of a great tenure from Craig Berube. When Berube took over the team as interim head coach in 2019, the Blues were in last place, and he coached them all the way to the franchise's first Stanley Cup Victory. With those kind of results, it shouldn't be long before Berube finds himself another NHL job.
