There was an interview that Matthew Knies gave recently in which he started running his mouth, perhaps a little too much.

When it comes to Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers, Knies shared his thoughts about the player and the team.

Matthew Knies asked how good Auston Matthews is. «Pretty damn good. He's not just the best goal scorer in the NHL but he plays defense too. He's kind of the best overall player [in the NHL] in my eyes.»

Knies was asked recently about Auston Matthews, and in reply, he made a backhanded comment towards Connor McDavid while complimenting Auston Matthews at the same time.

As far as goal scoring is concerned, there is no doubt that McDavid has the advantage over Auston Matthews, having 68 more points than Matthews last season in terms of point total.

Even though it is arguable whether Connor McDavid could ever be considered to be a Selke Trophy candidate, McDavid is very sound when it comes to defense. In addition, McDavid has a long history of performing well in playoffs, whereas Matthews does not have the same playoff pedigree as McDavid.

McDavid is the best overall player and it isn't even close. His gap in offense between everybody else makes up for whatever defensive deficiency you think there may be

It is significant to note that the gap between the two players during the playoffs is such a huge one, as Matthews career playoff totals are 50 games and 44 points. Unlike Matthews, McDavid has dominated the game, playing 49 games and scoring 75 points in his playoff career.

Although Matthews has improved defensively over the past few games, he still has a long way to go if he wants to make up the gap left by McDavid.
