Wayne Gretzky has re-joined the Oilers organization
Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers formed an iconic duo during his era of play.
Since then, he has had a remarkable career in the NHL and even took on a front-office position as a minority owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, in addition to owning a QMJHL team in the late 80s to early 90s.
Wayne Gretzky says he's still involved with the Edmonton Oilers front office
That ship has sailed as far as being part of everyday, day-to-day, 24-hour a day job. You know I have a tremendous relationship with the Oilers, Darryl and Renee Katz are good friends of ours and our kids are close friends. I know everybody there including Paul Coffey, the coach, the general manager, Kenny. My brother is an assistant general manager here, so I talk to them a lot about the team.
2016 Gretzky joined the Oilers front office as a partner and vice chairman. However, he resigned in 2021 to pursue a broadcasting job with TNT.
During a recent interview with Nick Alberga, Gretzky mentioned that his brother serves as an assistant general manager for the Oilers.
Even though Gretzky is connected to the Oilers front office and has close relationships with the Katz family and several ex-teammates in leadership and management roles, including Paul Coffey, he appears to be hands-off regarding day-to-day operations.
Though it seems like a substantial role, the scope of work for the Great One has not yet been confirmed.
