In a new interview, Ovechkin was joking that he'd like to see the Capitals acquire Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby in trade.
It's a great joke from Ovechkin, but it's also incredible to see him pledge full loyalty to the Washington Capitals in his career. They haven't been much of a playoff threat in years, but rumours of Ovechkin leaving the team have never surfaced - they've happened more with Sidney Crosby on the Penguins in recent years.
Last season, Ovechkin was dropping another joke involving Connor McDavid. When asked about any worries matching up against the Oilers, Ovechkin said Connor McMichael and Hendrix LaPierre are equals to McDavid and Draisaitl.
However, the Capitals have done an impressive job retooling their roster this offseason. The team has added plenty of young players who can also help the team win now, including Andrew Mangiapane, Jakob Chychrun, Matt Roy, and Logan Thompson. Next season, the Capitals could easily make the playoffs again.
The Great 8 is under contract for only two more seasons, and afterwards he has confirmed he plans to retire. Ovechkin currently sits at 853 career goals, just 41 away from passing Wayne Gretzky for the all-time record for goals scored. If he's able to keep up his current pace for at least one more year, he'll surely pass Gretzky.
