The move to introduce three on three overtime was a smash success at first, but has grown stale as teams play more conservatively.

Now, the Junior Hockey League to the KHL is the first to impose a new rule to stop teams running out the clock with back passes in overtime.

Players are not allowed to skate with the puck back to their half of the ice in OT. A minor penalty shall be imposed upon the team starting the 2nd violation of the rule.

If a player carries the puck past the center ice line in overtime, the play will be stopped and a faceoff will result in the puck carrier's defensive zone. The second time a team makes that offence, they'll receive a minor penalty.

It's a simple rule that will greatly improve the pace and action in a three on three overtime. A penalty in overtime is a serious threat to lose the game, so no team will even risk trying to play in the neutral zone - it'll be a full on offensive press at all times. Overseas hockey has clearly seen the same problem of excessive back passing that slows down the action.

If this rule has success wherever it is adopted, other leagues will surely take notice and consider similar rules, even in the NHL. Several league and team executives have likely already discussed a rule change of the sort, and we may see it being tested in the AHL soon.
